AK726 76MM GUN

HISTORY

In the early 1960s the Soviet navy introduced into service on the 'Kynda' class missile cruisers a twin '16-mm 60calibre rapid-firing dual-purpose gun mount which rapidly became the standard fit for a number of warship and auxiliary vessel classes. Now found on the 'Kiev' class aircraft-carriers, the 'Kara' and 'Kyunda' class missile cruisers, the 'Kashin' and 'Kildin' class destroyers, the 'Krivak I', 'Mirka' and 'Petya' class frigates and the 'Ivan Rogov' class amphibious warfare ships, the mount is usually associated with either an 'Owl Screech' or 'Hawk Screech' I-band fire-control radar. The system has also been exported to a number of Soviet client states on export version 'Kashin class destroyers and 'Petya' and 'Koni class frigates.

For smaller surface combatants such as the 'Matka' class missile craft and the 'Tarantul', 'Nanuchka III' and 'Pauk' class corvettes, the Soviets introduced in the l97Os a fully automatic single 76-mm 60-calibre dual-purpose gun which also had the option of local on-mount control by a gun crew if required. Fire-control for aerial targets is by a 'Bass Tilt' H-band radar, whilst surface targets need the use of a local sighting system in conjunction with the ship's search radar.
