Notes

Built as a cheaper version of the county class the York  along  with her near  sister EXETER

had  a involved role in the early part of  WW II .Hit by explosive  motor boats  launched from

Italian destroyers (SELLA,CRISPI) while laying in Suda Bay Crete. This caused major damage

to HMS York who was eventually beached in shallow water. she was later wrecked by demolition charges

when the island was evacuated on 22 May 1941.
